Kampos Orchard

Image

The orchards of Kampos in Chios are a unique attraction that combines natural scenery with local architectural features. Just 6 kilometers south of the town, the area is known for its fragrant citrus groves and historic mansions. A key characteristic of Kampos estates is their high walls of Thymianousa stone. The forbidding walls that visitors encounter along the road conceal entire microcosms that include intricately decorated courtyards, large mansions, tree‑shaded alleys, and gardens full of flowers. The orchards are watered by wells with a mangano that in the past were turned by animals; today irrigation uses modern systems. The area has been declared a “historic site” and “traditional settlement” protected by the Ministry of Culture.
