Sigri Petrified Forest Park

The Sigri Petrified Forest Park, covering 30 stremmas, lies on the southern side of Sigri, with access from the grounds of the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. Impressive root nodes and standing petrified trunks of angiosperm and coniferous trees emerge from the surrounding volcanic ash layers, excellently preserving their characteristics and proving the trees were petrified in their original growth position. Excavations in this area brought to light the root systems of 8 petrified trunks and 16 standing and fallen trunks, which belong to proto-pines and pines—ancestral forms of the modern pine. In addition, a petrified turf was revealed with abundant twigs, cones, and leaves of conifers as well as angiosperms.
