Nissiopi Petrified Forest Park

Image

On Nissiopi (Megalonisi), the islet that closes Sigri Bay from the west, the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest has created the Nissiopi Petrified Forest Marine Park—the first marine fossil park in Greece. Visitors can tour both the terrestrial part of the islet via walking paths and the marine area around the park with a special glass-bottom boat for observing the seabed. In the terrestrial section, 44 impressive fossiliferous sites have been showcased, containing petrified trunks of fruit-bearing and coniferous trees, standing in their natural position or lying down, which lived in western Lesvos millions of years ago. Among the excavation finds, especially striking is a petrified tree trunk of the sequoia family, 17.20 m long, revealed in its original position, while a fallen petrified trunk of an ancestral pine, 12.44 m long, was also found.
