Wildlife Observation
Nature lovers and observers of rare species will find on Chios a natural “paradise.” The island’s biodiversity includes many species of dragonfly and butterfly, which can be admired either independently or with a specialist guide. These species are valuable: dragonflies control populations of harmful insects, and butterflies contribute to pollination and the propagation of many plants. In northern Chios most butterfly species are encountered, while dragonflies are found in water habitats such as the Armolia lake, Kato Fana beach, the Marmaro wetland in Kardamyla, the Malagkiotis river mouth in Volissos, and Kambia beach—mainly in spring and summer. In total, 29 dragonfly species have been recorded. Of all these habitats, the Armolia lake has been identified as the island’s most important dragonfly site.
