Pantelidion Girls' School

The Girls’ School in Myrina was founded in 1845 to educate the girls of Lemnos. As early as 1857–1858 it had 42 pupils, who were taught writing, reading, arithmetic, geography, handicrafts and catechism, while in 1859 they reached 80. Expenses were covered by community revenues and donations from affluent Lemnians. Around 1873, the pupils numbered 100, divided into 4 primary classes and 2 of the Hellenic School, with two female teachers. In the early 20th century a housing problem arose, which the benefactor Odysseas Pantelidis solved by buying the residence of Doukas Palaiologos to house the school and funding additional expenses. In his honor, the school was renamed “Pantelideio” Girls’ School. It subsequently operated in succession as the Girls’ Primary School, the Inspectorate of Primary Education, the Myrina Technical Vocational Lyceum (TEL), and today houses a department of the University of the Aegean.
