Old Settlement
The old settlement of Agios Efstratios was built on the hillside above the harbor. The houses, constructed of stone, were two or three stories, south-facing and of notable architectural value. The 1968 earthquake caused the destruction or demolition of most buildings, but the Marasleios School and about twenty houses were preserved and still adorn the village. The Marasleios School, which functioned as a school from 1912 until the earthquake, has been recognized as a newer monument and a listed historic building. The old part of the settlement, although heavily damaged, has been designated a traditional settlement. There, many abandoned buildings with features of traditional architecture survive and are in need of care, protection and restoration.
