Pythagoreio

Pythagoreio is built atop the ancient city of Astypalaia, the historic capital of Samos and one of antiquity’s most important cities. The modern town took its name from Pythagoras, the great philosopher and mathematician, whose statue dominates the harbor. Just 14 km from the island capital, it is Samos’s most cosmopolitan and popular resort. Pythagoreio’s archaeological, cultural, and historical significance is globally recognized, as it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The ancient city was already famed in antiquity for two pioneering constructions: the first artificial harbor and the Eupalinian Tunnel—the impressive 6th‑century BC water conduit. Today, numerous cultural and intellectual events are held in Pythagoreio, centered on the restored Ancient Theater. The settlement’s architectural character, stone‑paved streets, picturesque quarters, and traditional boatyard, together with excellent tourist infrastructure, attract thousands of visitors every year.
