Plomari
Plomari lies in southern Lesvos and belongs administratively to the Municipal Unit of Plomari in the Municipality of Mytilene. It is the island’s third largest settlement by population and one of its most important ports, with strong tourist activity. Plomari is synonymous with ouzo production, the “birthplace” of the traditional spirit, and with soapmaking, which developed especially from the late 19th century, contributing significantly to the island’s economy and exports. Landmarks include the centuries-old plane tree (1813) in the main square and the church of Saint Nicholas (1847). The settlement stands out for its distinctive architecture, town plan and many preserved industrial buildings—olive mills, soap factories and boatyards—testifying to the area’s artisanal and commercial heyday.
