The city of Samos is the island’s capital and main port, located at the island’s northeast end, built amphitheatrically around Vathy Bay. It has a population of about 9,000, most of whom work in tourism. Central points of the city include Pythagoras Square, built in 1864, and the characteristic lion sculpture, a symbol of Samian bravery. The city is the island’s administrative center and offers high‑quality tourist infrastructure, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Neoclassical and traditional buildings adorn the town and are representative examples of Samos’s traditional architecture; some house the Archaeological Museum and the Town Hall.
