Roman Aqueduct of Mytilene

Image

At Moria, 6 km from Mytilene, lie the remains of a Roman aqueduct. This major engineering work conveyed water from springs on the Olympus mountain massif to the island’s east side. Its construction is dated to the late 2nd c. AD and aimed to meet the city’s ever-growing water needs. The architect of the Mytilene aqueduct, to support the central water channel and ensure the proper gradient, built single-arched aqueduct bridges at Aneraïda, Koustéri and Paspalá; double-arched ones at Kamaroudia and Koutsouk Loutsa; four-arched ones at Paspalá and probably at Vrysouda and Thyridia; and a multi-arched bridge at Moria. The aqueduct bridge at Moria is the most significant section. It consists of 17 arches and three superimposed rows of arches in the central section, created with the help of 16 piers.
