Fourni

Roman Sarcophagus

In the central square of the settlement of Fourni an impressive Roman-era marble sarcophagus (2nd c. AD) is on display, found on a plot south of the Church of Saint Nicholas. It is the funerary monument of the young Epameinon, son of Tilon and Philte, who died at just 25, as the inscription on its side records: “Epameinon, son of Tilon and Philte—noble hero—farewell, aged 25.” The sarcophagus is of the Alexandrian type, decorated with stylized wreaths, floral garlands with ivy leaves, and rosettes, and it shows similarities to two others kept in the Kambos Collection on Ikaria, ancient Oinoe. It is one of the significant archaeological monuments attesting to Fourni’s centuries-long history
