Rimokastro
On the Aipos plateau above Vrontados, remains of agro-pastoral installations (5th–1st c. BC) have been identified. These installations were organized in a strategically important area along the “Ellinostrata,” which connected the island’s eastern coastal zone with the north and west. The most important complex is at Rimokastro, above the gorge of the Krikelis torrent, known as “Agrios.” The main building group—probably the owner’s residence—has roofed rooms on either side of a central square courtyard. The SE wing was likely a tower. Ancillary buildings and a large, well-built cistern served the residents’ varied agricultural activities. The site was in use at least from the 5th to the 4th c. BC continuously through Roman times, and finds indicate it was not completely abandoned at least until Byzantine times.
