Spheroidal Weathering Formations of Faraklo

On the north coast of Lemnos, near the settlement of Atsiki, lies Faraklo, an area with spectacular natural formations. Here one encounters large spherical stones standing out in red against the pale rock. These formations were created 27–33 million years ago, when sediments accumulated in a submarine channel and over time turned into sandstone. Nature, through chemical processes, erosion, and the action of water, waves, and salts, gradually “sculpted” the rocks into their spherical shapes. The result is a unique landscape of geological interest that draws every eye and showcases nature’s power and patience in creating rare works of art.
