Kalloni Gulf Wetland

The Gulf of Kalloni is one of the most important parts of Lesvos’ ecological wealth. It lies in the southwestern part of the island, about 40 km from Mytilene. It is internationally known as “Aristotle’s Lagoon,” as the philosopher studied the area and its marine life, recording his observations in his work History of Animals. It is a gathering place for many endangered species and many rare waterbirds. In recent years, birdwatching at the Kalloni Salt Pans has attracted many scientists and nature lovers. Birds you can see include the Flamingo, with its pink plumage, the Black Stork, the Avocet, the Black-winged Stilt, the Red-breasted Goose, the White Stork, and many others. The area is also lush with pines, olive trees, reedbeds, a great variety of rare orchids, and wild plants, offering abundant food and natural shelter to all living organisms on the island.
