Vatera–Polichnitos Wetland
The Vatera–Polichnitos wetland lies on the southeastern side of the Gulf of Kalloni and is a wetland of particular natural beauty. Over 100 bird species have been recorded in the area, some migratory and others not. Herons, shags, flamingos, glossy ibises, curlews, white storks, and moorhens are among the birds one can admire. The flora in the Polichnitos area is also especially important, characterized mainly by extensive olive groves and the sporadic presence of small thickets composed of kermes oaks, mastic trees, Jerusalem thorns, oaks, and large expanses of Turkish pine. At the mouth of the Almyropotamos, reedbed vegetation with common reeds and bulrushes dominates.
