Lemnos
Alyki Wetland

The Aliki wetland is considered one of the country’s most important habitats and is part of the Natura 2000 network. Aliki lies on the northeast side of Lemnos, near Kontopouli, covering a total area of about 6,000 stremmas. It is a shallow coastal lagoon that fills with water in winter and, in summer, when it dries out, becomes a salt flat. In this ecosystem various bird species rest, feed, and breed, such as lesser kestrels and lanner falcons. It is separated from the sea by a sandy corridor that acts as a natural barrier. Aliki is the only natural salt lake of such size that has not been altered by humans.
