Vathes Reservoir (Moundes)

The Vathes reservoir-lake, also known as Mounde, lies northeast of the settlement of Kastanies and covers 17,8 stremmata. It was created by building two dams on the Myrsonas stream and today is an artificial wetland of particular environmental value. The lake has been designated an Important Bird Area (GR143), hosting rich flora and fauna and populations of protected and endemic species. Around it grow plane trees, pines, reeds, and oleanders, while the presence of amphibians, reptiles, and a variety of birds underscores its biological importance. At the same time, human activities such as grazing and irrigation put pressure on the ecosystem, making its conservation and protection necessary.
