Plaka Lighthouse

Image

At the northeastern tip of Lemnos, near the village of Plaka, stands the Plaka Lighthouse, built in 1908 by French engineers on the site of a smaller 1894 lighthouse from Ottoman rule. At 25 m high, it is a natural lookout with views of the islet Sergitsi, Samothrace, Imbros, the Dardanelles, Lesvos, and Agios Efstratios. In the 20th century, the Aegean lighthouse network was crucial both for Allied naval operations and for the safe navigation of cargo and merchant ships before the widespread use of electronic positioning aids. Although today its practical significance has diminished, its history and unique position make it an attractive destination for visitors to Lemnos. The lighthouse opens to the public every year on the third Sunday of August.
