Kokkinopoulos Lighthouse
The Kokkinopoulo Lighthouse on Psara was built in 1909 by the Ottoman Empire and was incorporated into the Hellenic Lighthouse Network after the island’s liberation in 1912. It stands on the island’s southeast side, near Cape Agios Georgios, with a focal height of 78 meters. The circular stone tower, 14.5 meters high, is accompanied by a keeper’s house with bedrooms, kitchen, storeroom and courtyard. Initially oil-fueled, it was electrified in 1984 and became automatic. It ceased operating during World War II and resumed in 1945. The building has been designated a listed historic monument and was fully restored in 2014 with EU funding. Access is via a partly paved, partly dirt road 3.5 km from the village of Plaka, and its hilltop location with panoramic Aegean views makes it an emblematic Psara landmark.
