Halaris Gorge

The Chalaris Gorge is one of Ikaria’s most important natural treasures and is included in the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. It is an impressive geomorphological formation where the Chalaris River cuts through the landscape, forming waterfalls, plunge pools, small lakes, and natural bridges. The route through the gorge is unique, with constant changes of scenery, shady clusters of plane trees, dense vegetation, and rich wildlife. The gorge is a living wetland with rare flora and fauna, such as the Ikarian snowdrop, the otter, the freshwater crab, and migratory birds like Eleonora’s falcon and the little egret. Inside, one encounters the stone bridge and the Ratsos Waterfall, 45 meters high, which spills into a natural pool. The gorge is directly linked to Ikaria’s history and mythology, as the archaeological site of Nas lies at its end. Thus, a hike through the Chalaris Gorge is not only a nature experience but also a journey through the island’s history and culture.
