Oinousses Town

Oinousses is a cluster of small islands, with a single inhabited settlement on the largest. The traditional settlement in the Chora of Oinousses is amphitheatrically built around the harbor on the island’s south side. In the early 19th century the eponymous settlement developed at the natural harbor of Mandraki. The village stands out for its authentic traditional character. Quaint cobbled lanes and lush tree-lined rows compose a distinctive scene of traditional stone-built, tile-roofed houses, elegant neoclassicals, and imposing captains’ and shipowners’ mansions. The presence of tasteful public buildings and monuments enhances the aristocratic air the island exudes. At the village center stands the church of Agios Nikolaos, patron of seafarers, decorated with elaborate frescoes and thousands of votive offerings.
