Agios Efstratios Town
Agios Efstratios has a single village with a picturesque little harbor on the island’s northwest. It is built in the valley formed by the Paradeisi and Tenediontis streams. The old village stood atop a small hill, where residents built their houses and windmills following Aegean architectural tradition. After the devastating 1968 earthquake, the new village was built in the orchard area, as residents abandoned their old homes. Today small detached houses predominate, while a few traditional two-story buildings at the harbor entrance recall the past. Well-tended gardens, vegetable plots and the natural patina of time lend a special character, while the few little houses on the quay, now restored, preserve the memory of their history. The entire village embraces the harbor, creating an atmosphere of absolute calm.
