Chora
Chora, the former capital of Samos, lies at the foot of Tsigol Hill in the island’s southeast, 3.5 km from Pythagoreio and 17 km from Samos Town. The traditional settlement is characterized by the post‑Byzantine “cross‑shaped” urban layout, centered on the Church of the Nativity of Christ in Mesaki, with chapels at each entrance, while Byzantine features mingle with modern residences in the narrow lanes. Chora has important monuments, such as the Hegemonic Mansion, old churches, fountains and washhouses, attesting to its rich history. Its economy is based on agriculture—mainly olives—and tourism, while Potokaki serves as the village’s seaside outlet with developed tourist activity. Visitors can enjoy the springs, narrow picturesque streets and panoramic views over the plain, the Heraion Bay and the Asia Minor coast.
