Christodoulidio Boys’ School

In the mid-19th century (1845–1875), Lemnos took its first steps toward organizing education with institutions such as the Mutual Teaching School, the Girls’ School, and the Great School in Myrina. While the capital had infrastructure and funding, the island’s villages faced serious shortages, and school attendance remained uncertain for most children. In 1870, the Lemnian benefactors Kyriakos and Maria Christodoulou, who lived in Egypt, supported the Boys’ School in Portianou, later known as the “Christodoulideio.” Pupils from neighboring villages also attended, although enrollments were limited. From 1874, the local community took over its management, gradually increasing funding. The building remained in use after the school closed and was recently converted into a Thematic Tourism Information Center, also honoring the teacher and fighter Emmanouil Ioannidis.
