Hatzigiannio Girls’ School

Image

The Hatzigiannio Girls’ School in Karlovasi is one of the most important examples of neoclassical architecture on Samos. Built in 1903 with a donation from industrialist and politician Ioannis Hatzigiannis, it housed the Girls’ School that had operated in the town since 1861. With a symmetrical layout, elegant portico and distinctive ceiling paintings, the building stands out for its architectural and aesthetic value. It accommodated classrooms and the Karlovasi Primary School for decades, and since 1989 has been granted to the University of the Aegean and functions as a university library. Today it hosts thousands of titles, including the precious collection of the historic Porfyriada School, continuing to be a living cell of education and culture for the area.
