Windmill of Perama, Gera

Image

The Windmill of Perama in Gera is a characteristic example of early 20th-century industrial architecture and a significant monument of Lesvos’ productive history. Built in a privileged position, directly in front of the historic Surlagas tannery and at a point where the gulf narrows, it harnessed strong north or south winds to grind oak acorns, essential to the tannery’s operation. The mill is cylindrical with a slight inward batter and was constructed with local stone, solid bricks and kourasani, while inside it is divided into three levels with the mechanism at the top. Although it has long ceased to operate, its distinctive architecture and integration into Gera’s industrial landscape make it an emblematic landmark. In 1997 it was designated a listed historic monument, preserving the living memory of an entire era.
