Monument of the Oinoussian Mother

In Oinousses stands the so-called statue of the Oinoussian Mother, symbolizing the island’s maritime history. This two-meter-high bronze statue is the work of sculptor Maria Papaconstantinou. A landmark of the island, it stands at the harbor entrance and welcomes travelers. It depicts a mother holding or waving a kerchief, bidding farewell to her children as they depart on sea voyages, thus symbolizing the island’s illustrious seafaring tradition. The statue is a tribute to sailors’ mothers and to the sea as an element of life and parting.
