Vavyloi
Vavyloi, a small yet historic Mastichochori of Chios, lies within the fertile plain of Kampos, about 8 km from the town. The village preserves strong Genoese architectural elements, visible chiefly in the elaborately decorated house doors, each adorned with a different coat of arms. The inhabitants are traditionally engaged in agriculture, cultivating vegetables and the well‑known Vavyloi beans. The village’s Byzantine Museum, housing ecclesiastical relics, is of special interest. A short distance away stands Panagia Krina, one of the most important 13th‑century Byzantine churches, set in a green landscape of pines and old Genoese mansions. Adding a distinctive touch to the village is the little church of the Presentation (Hypapante), decorated with murals by the American artist Mary Fraser, painted in the 1960s as a tribute to Chios.
