Church of Saint Nicholas in the Traditional Settlement

In the center of the ruined old village rises the Church of Agios Nikolaos. Although the exact date of its construction is unknown, an inscription embedded on the west façade above the entrance records its renovation in 1969, after the earthquake, likely thanks to a donation by a Lemnian of the diaspora. Its presence on the same site since the early 20th century is documented by photographs. The church is a post-Byzantine single-aisled basilica, with a semicircular apse at the sanctuary, a double-pitched wooden roof and a raised women’s gallery. The walls are of local stone with plaster, and the floor with geometric motifs in stone slabs and the colorful, carved iconostasis of neoclassical style stand out. Important relics survive, such as icons of Hosios Efstratios and of the Five Martyrs, as well as priestly vestments from destroyed churches. Today it functions mainly on feasts dedicated to Agios Nikolaos and Agios Efstratios, while visits are by arrangement with the island’s priest.
