Kallimasia Folklore Museum

In 1995, President Yiannis Kolliaros and the members of the “Friends of the Kallimasia Folklore Museum” association decided to use the 550 sq m basement of the Gymnasium building to house a collection of folkloric material. With the help of notable villagers, they first set up the loutrouveio (olive press) and the rembikario (ouzo distillery). They then built, in traditional stone and arches, the blacksmith’s shop, the tailor’s, the cobbler’s, a traditional house, and a café-grocery, and arranged spaces for the professions of barber, quilt-maker, candle-maker, basket-maker, farrier, pack-saddle maker, butcher, and others. On one arch they set up Karagiozis’s shadow-theater screen. They also created a field with a hut, well, and threshing floor. All the objects and clothing were donated by residents from many villages and from Chios town.
