“Marasleios – Logothetios” School

Around 1892, thanks to donations from the “Agios Efstratios” Brotherhood in Egypt, the island’s first Primary School opened. The first teacher was Panagiotis Triantafyllidis from Samos (1893–1896), followed mainly by local educators. The school’s finances relied on levies on exportable products and student contributions. The six-member Ecclesiastical Committee also played a significant role, securing books on credit from Lemnos and creating debts often covered by donors. In the early 20th century, on the initiative of Porphyrios B΄ Logothetis (then priest of the Greek community in Paris) and donations from him and national benefactor Grigorios Maraslis (1,600 gold Napoleons from Logothetis and 500 gold twenty-franc pieces from Maraslis), a new school was erected — the “Marasleios and Logotheteios School” — completed in 1909. The impressive building operated until 1968, when the earthquake rendered it unfit. Since 1969, the school has been housed in a new building and the former ceased to function.
