EOKA Monument
On 16 August 1960, Cyprus gained its independence, ending nearly a century of British rule. Claims for self-determination or union with Greece had been voiced since the early 20th century, reaching a peak after World War II. EOKA (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters) played a decisive role in the struggle, organizing sabotage and attacks against the colonial forces under Georgios Grivas (1955–1959). Archbishop Makarios promoted the cause of self-determination internationally, even during his exile, while Father Papastavros Papagathangelou inspired youth with patriotic speeches until his expulsion in 1956. In Myrina, in August 1958, a monument was unveiled in honor of the EOKA fighters, in the presence of large crowds, Makarios, and Papastavros. The monument remains a living symbol of remembrance, attracting visitors from Greece and Cyprus.
