Metochi of Karakalou Monastery
In the island’s northwest, near the Metochi of Megistis Lavra, stands the second-largest metochi on the island, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour and subordinate to the Karakallou Monastery of Mount Athos. Built atop a hill in the 17th century, it offered sea surveillance and safety from pirate raids. Its toponym and position gave it the name “Foteinou.” Its contribution to local society was significant, as evidenced by documents of purchases, exchanges and dedications by residents, which included land, houses, animals and fruit trees. After the 1968 earthquake it was abandoned, but parts of foundations, a gate, paving and ancillary buildings survive. The little church, a single-aisled basilica with apse and tiled roof, bears a dedicatory inscription on the west façade. Inside, the carved wooden iconostasis stands out, with decoration echoing Baroque, Rococo and neoclassical elements. Despite its abandonment, the bond of Karakallou Monastery with Agios Efstratios remains alive.
