Temple of Phanaios Apollo, Kato Fanoi

At Kato Fana, on a low hill, survive remains of the Sanctuary of Phanaios Apollo, on the same site where today stands the small chapel of Saints Theodoroi. The epithet “Phanaios” derives from Apollo revealing to Leto the place of his birth, Delos, there; hence it is considered the “Delion of Chios.” The sanctuary was important not only for Chios but for Ionia in general. Its fame reached as far as Egypt, as evidenced especially by the series of Egyptian scarabs found during excavation. Today, the archaeological site preserves remains of the archaic temple and its peribolos, architectural members reused in later building phases, and remains of an Early Christian basilica.
