Watermill of Xylosyrtis

Kavo Papa Lighthouse stands at Ikaria’s southwestern tip and is designated a Monument according to Law 3028/2002, due to its historical, technical and nautical significance. It was built between 1886 and 1890 by the French Lighthouse Company during the Ottoman period and has operated since 1890; it was incorporated into the Greek lighthouse network after the Balkan Wars. The cylindrical tower, 11 meters high with a focal height of 65 meters, is an important point of reference for mariners and islanders, ensuring safe navigation in the Aegean. Access is only on foot via a path, and the lighthouse has been fully automated since 2000. The monument is linked to Greece’s maritime tradition and provides valuable documentation of 19th‑century lighthouse lighting systems.
