“Ta Markou” Tower

The “Ta Markou” or “T’ Amarkou” Tower near the village of Pispilounta in Amani dominates a landscape of rare natural beauty, rich in flora and fauna. It dates to the 15th century and formed the central defensive tower of a medieval settlement whose traces are still visible in the area. These fortified settlements played a key role in protecting the routes linking Chios’s northern coasts with the Fortress of Volissos. The monument combines historical value with the presence of an archaic irrigation system preserved in its surroundings, giving the whole a special cultural and nature-loving dimension. Today the tower retains the ground floor and part of the first floor, a characteristic example of medieval defensive architecture that still testifies to the past and the area’s strategic importance.
