Mantamados
Mandamados lies on the northeastern side of Lesvos, 37 km from Mytilene. The settlement was created by merging several coastal hamlets due to repeated pirate raids in the Middle Ages. The inhabitants, who once lived on the surrounding coast, were forced to abandon their homes and settled around the area of the old church of Archangel Michael, considered the island’s protector. Its name may derive from “mantemádon,” denoting people who worked “mandemi” (cast iron). Another view is that it comes from the Turkish word “mandades,” meaning herders of old oxen. Animal husbandry and fishing are the main occupations. It is also known for excellent agricultural and dairy products, as well as pottery and folk art. Traditional architecture, picturesque alleys and cobbled lanes make the settlement one of exceptional beauty.
