Sarlitza Palace Hotel

Image

The Sarlitza Palace Hotel in Thermi was built in 1909 to French architects’ plans for Hasan Efendi Molla Mustafa and opened in 1910. Its name, meaning “yellow hot spring,” derived from the area’s thermal springs. It combined accommodation, hydrotherapy and recreation in its gardens, attracting aristocrats and affluent visitors, Muslims and Christians alike. Notable figures who stayed there included Pavlos Kountouriotis, Eleftherios Venizelos, Stratis Myrivilis and Prince Paul, establishing it as a cosmopolitan resort and spa town. In 1914 it hosted Asia Minor refugees, and continued to operate until the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922. In 1923 it passed to the Greek state as exchangeable property and operated until 1982. Since then it has been abandoned; today its management belongs to the North Aegean Region.
