Psara
Spitalia
The Spitalia on Psara are a historic 18th-century complex built literally beside the sea, washed on three sides. They originally functioned as quarantine wards, where Psarian sailors remained in isolation upon returning from voyages until they were certified healthy. The complex comprises five simple, stone-built rooms with vaulted roofs and a fireplace in each, reflecting the austere, functional architecture of the era. In 1976, the Greek National Tourism Organization, under architect Aris Konstantinidis, renovated the buildings and converted them into a restaurant, preserving their traditional character. Today, Spitalia operates as a café–restaurant, one of Psara’s most characteristic and tasteful spots where history meets hospitality.
