Church of Saint Efstratios
The magnificent Church of Saint Eustratios, patron of Thymiana and second in size on Chios after the Taxiarchis church in Mesta, dominates the settlement. Construction began in 1890 using the famed Thymiana stone, the characteristic reddish material quarried locally that made Thymiana’s craftsmen renowned for their skill. The church, an example of neo-Byzantine basilica with dome, impresses with both its size and harmonious forms. Inside is kept a relic of Saint Eustratios, while in the courtyard stands the tomb monument of Metropolitan Joachim Stroumbis of Chios. The courtyard, paved with intricate pebble mosaics, completes the imposing image of a monument that celebrates on 13 December and serves as a major religious and cultural center for the entire island.
