Traditional Café “Kafentaria”
The “Kafentaria” in Agiasos is one of Lesvos’ most important historic cafés and represents the village’s traditional way of life, customs and mores. The stone building was erected in 1857 by the church of Panagia, together with the guesthouses (Hani), and renovated after the great fire of 1877. With characteristic large windows and neoclassical architectural features, the café was a center of social, professional and cultural activity, hosting music events, lectures and political gatherings. During the German occupation, it was a site of resistance events for the national anniversary of 25 March 1821; three days later, in the so-called “Agiasos Blockade,” two youths were killed and others wounded by German forces. After the war, the building housed the Agiasos Reading Society “Anaptyxi,” and in 1999 it was listed by the Ministry of Culture as a historic monument and work of art. Today, the café preserves its traditional atmosphere with wooden details, bright color combinations and the aromas of coffee, hot drinks and local sweets, offering visitors a vivid glimpse of daily life in the past.
