Lisvori
Lisvori is a mid-sized traditional settlement in central Lesvos with a history dating from the 11th or 12th century. Its original name was “Lesvorion,” from the words Lesvos and Orion. The area is of significant archaeological interest, as excavations by the University of Crete have uncovered evidence of Palaeolithic groups in the Kalloni basin and southern Lesvos, as well as sherds indicating the flourishing of the Mycenaean culture on the island. Lisvori has fertile soils favoring cultivation, with notable production of anise—a key ingredient for ouzo—as well as chickpeas, onions, alfalfa and livestock products. Particularly renowned are the rusks and breads made from local grains. The Lisvori Thermal Springs, known for their therapeutic properties, are also located here, attracting visitors and showcasing Lisvori as a place of wellness and cultural heritage.
