Marmarellis–Hatzikonstanti Bakery

The former Marmarellis–Chatzikonstanti bakery in Mesagros, Lesvos, is a characteristic monument of 20th-century production and commerce. It was founded after the 1922 Asia Minor Catastrophe by Socrates Chatzikonstanti, known as Marmarellis, and operated until the late 1970s. It is a single-storey stone building of 65 sq.m., with two distinct spaces: the main bakery area where bread was sold and a raised mezzanine where kneading took place. On its north wall survives a mural by Theophilos (1929–1932), narrating in three registers the story of bread and framed by vegetal motifs, birds and ornamental designs. The building passed to the Ministry of Culture in 1984, when restoration and conservation began, and since 1990 it has been open to visitors, presenting baking utensils and objects and highlighting the link between folk art and everyday life.
